About this work
A chimpanzee looks at you up close and with a serious look, through large black glasses. His face is full of wrinkles and his lips are slightly pursed, as if he is thinking about whether he wants to tell you something. The portrait has humour, but also something dignified. A wise old head who seems to know more than he says.
The work combines sharp pen drawing with loose, flowing watercolor colors in turquoise, blue, orange, yellow and pink. A grid of black lines runs across the image, and drops of paint run down at the edges. The warm tones on the face look nice against the cooler blue in fur and background. The square format keeps all the attention on that look.
Nice in a study, children's room, library or office with a wink.
